The New Zealand Farm Environment Trust is an independent team of volunteers whose mission is to help kiwi farmers farm more sustainably and productively. Their core work is to organise and administer the Ballance Farm Environment Awards – a nationwide competition that rewards farmers around the country for leading the way in environmental sustainability.
The original NZFET / BFEA identity was beginning to look tired and washed out – and it was almost impossible to read at small sizes. Ballance approached us with a simple brief – to make the logo work harder without increasing the size of its footprint. Holding on to the greens and blue colour palette, we updated it with fresher, more energetic hues. The organic curves were modernised and given better definition, and we chose a friendly, modern slab-serif font with good spacing and a tall x-height for better readability.
In addition to the logo, we introduced a new graphic device – the geometric mountain – to the identity system. Clean and vibrant, it adds a modern, fresh edge to web pages, stationery and communications work. We also found a beautiful hero image of a native New Zealand tui on a Harakeke flower. The jewel-like colours, the energy of the bird, and the emotional response it inspires perfectly complement the NZFET brand and its purpose in New Zealand.
